ALOHA...

My total neighbor ( & BFF) was wanting to throw a b-day party for his partner, Dean and I told him I would help It is going to be a surprise luau. I am going to get everything set-up and ready and they are just going to show up when they are supposed to. I am calling all creative people to give me ideas for a little island splendor. I have already got Tonia, from over the tipsy top thinking. They are having a pig roasted and hawaiian hula and fire dancers so basically I am in charge of a dessert bar and the decorations. I already did the invitations and I have posted one below... Help me think, the pressure is on- they are gay for hell's sake! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated- although I will probably take ALL the credit. Just Kidding- well kindof.

of course you need the tiki torches--i went to one party where they must have literally had 100 of them lit all around the backyard and it was AWESHUME.

one thing that could be really funny is if you could find the coconut bras for cheap and require all the ladies to wear them over their clothes and the men leis....

will put on my thinking cap

I've got a salad recipe that is literally, better than a dessert. And I think you should make some Key Lime bars with Rum...

My mom makes a really yummy Hawaiian cake. Let me know if you want the recipe and I'll email it to you.

Grass skirts hanging from the buffet tables...still thinking...

paper umbrellas for the drinks - either on sticks OR I have seen them on STRAWS at Target

Tiki torches is a very very good idea, Min.

You've probably already thought of plastic Leas -

Thanks again for the blog help Amy.

ukuleles! maybe even 3 ukulele players walking around playing and singing - or is that Mexican?

Scatter macadamia nuts, pieces of lava rock, little surf boards, and plastic hibiscus flowers on the tables?

go tribal!

Oh glass apothecary or other jars with sand and seashells in them. I did that in my boys' bath and it is my absolutely favoritist thing.

Blow up dolls in bikinins....oh wait...wrong type of party.

Try this on for size:
"Coconut bowling". You can either use actual pineapples (hollowed out from the bottom a bit to lighten them) for pins or make your own with 2-liter bottles that have a little sand or water inside to weigh them down against any breeze. These bottles could then be decorated in a variety of ways to look like pineapples. Three pins would work the best because coconuts are a lot smaller than normal sized bowling balls. Make sure to have some stationed at the other end of your 'alley' to reset the pins after each turn. Once the game is set up, let the fun begin. This could be a game played throughout the party for fun or you could hold a single elimination tournament until a single winner is established."

You could then give the hollowed out pineapples to Caylor at the end of the game.

Here is a good looking dessert:
Caramelized Banana Tart (with coconut chantilly)

2 qt milk
2 c heavy cream
8 oz sugar
2 bananas, sliced
8 egg yolks
1 c sugar to caramelize
4 eggs
1 tart shell, blind baked
5 oz cornstarch
8 oz sugar
4 oz butter (soft)
1 oz vanilla
1 lb coconut flakes

1. Sift cornstarch and sugar and combine with yolks and eggs.
2. Boil milk and sugar.
3. Temper egg mixture into milk.
4. When mixture becomes thick and begins to bubble, remove from heat and stir in butter, vanilla and coconut.
5. Set aside in refrigerator to cool.
6. Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form.

Assembly:

1. Fold cream into custard to make chantilly cream.
2. Spread chantilly evently in tart shell.
3. Lay bananas on top and sprinkle with sugar.
4. Use torch to caramelize sugar.

One last idea:
Give them a cake in the shape of boobies. It would be a gas.

I was just at a grocery store and they had plastic little dessert plates in the shape of a Hawaiian shirt. I thought of you.

Oooh how fun!!

Let's see...mmm...thinking....

Definately need: tiki torches, leis, bamboo furniture, trees wrapped with twinkling lights, pink flamingos and any gawdy Polynesian art you can find!!

Here's a recipe for:
Chocolate Thunder Bars
• 4 cups quick-cooking oats
• 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon salt, divided

• 1 cup butter or margarine
• 2 1/2 cups brown sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 5 teaspoons vanilla, divided
• 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
• 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
• 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
• 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
• 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
• 2 tablespoons butter or margarine

PREPARATION: Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine oats, flour, baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

In a mixing bowl, with electric mixer, beat 1 cup butter for 30 seconds; add brown sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs and 2 teaspoons of vanilla and beat well. Now, add the dry mix to the wet mix. Mix well and let it sit.

In a saucepan, heat up sweetened condensed milk with chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons butter and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Stir until smooth, then remove from heat. Now stir in walnuts and the rest of the vanilla, 3 teaspoons.

Put half of the oat mixture in a 15-by-10 pan, then put the chocolate mix on top of the oats and add the remaining oats on top of the chocolate. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Before serving, cut into squares.
Makes 35 (2-inch) bars

** you could to be funny and on a gay note, call these "chocolate thunder from down under bars!"

I am so jealous of your neighbors, they get to party with you and I don't. Anyways, Costco has these Fruit sorbet packs (I think 12 in a box maybe just 8)it is sorbet in real fruit halves like oranges, lemons. They are de-lish, and perfect for the theme. If you are spending there money, then go for it.
Love your guts, Malisa

now why not you don't call the real Islanders when you are in need of a real island party. Friends- now questionable- jk If your going to roast a pig, you have to maka a umu the only way, so make sure you know some poly's to do that for you, and dancers- well looks like that is covered for you, we have a group, yes my kids included, to bad not us!!!! The food should be normal poly plates, teri- chicken, beef, and macaroni salad, sicky rice, but hey your plans are probably complete, we live here at my house with Tongan and island music, let me know if you want me to make you a cd. normal "eats" have for dessert like regular cake, and tongan pie, or island triffle(that is to die for) let me know if you need help.. you crazy girl...
